Voyage LA Feature: 3 Essential Lessons From a Hard Year

This Voyage LA feature covers Synergy Events, our DJ, MC, and lighting team, in the magazine’s Daily Inspiration series. Rex talked about how we got here, what made it hard, and how we approach weddings. You can read the full Voyage LA interview here.

What Synergy Events Does for Weddings

Synergy Events is led by Rex and Amanda. Rex handles the music and performance. Amanda runs operations and also MCs.

Couples get one team for the planning, the timeline, and the music.

We work across San Diego, Los Angeles, Orange County, and Temecula. Lately we have been focusing on higher-end weddings, where couples want a team that plans with them in detail rather than just pressing play.

Our work has been recognized by The Knot Best of Weddings and its Hall of Fame, and by WeddingWire Couples’ Choice every year since 2016. Those honors come from couples’ reviews, so they reflect how people felt about their day.

Three Lessons From the Voyage LA Feature

Here are the three lessons we would pass along to any couple, planner, or vendor.

Lesson 1: Plan the Timeline Before the Wedding Day

Every couple has a planning meeting with us before the wedding. By the end of it, the day runs on a timeline they have already approved.

The Voyage LA feature highlights this combination of real DJ craft and careful planning as what sets us apart.

That planning is what lets Rex focus on the room during the event. He can read the crowd and keep the dance floor where it should be, because the structure is already settled.

Lesson 2: Real DJ Craft Belongs at a Wedding

Rex is known for bringing turntablism to weddings. Scratching and live mixing are part of the performance, not a gimmick.

That can mean a scratch routine during cocktail hour, a custom transition for the couple’s entrance, or a mix that feels built for that crowd.

The Voyage LA feature describes it simply: a wedding asks for everything a DJ has. That means reading a room, keeping a timeline on track, and making a few hundred people with different tastes feel like the night was built for them.

Lesson 3: Trust Takes Years, and It Starts With Showing Up

The hardest stretch for Synergy Events was 2020. Events stopped almost overnight, and we spent months rescheduling weddings and staying in touch with couples whose plans kept changing.

We came out of it with a lot of respect for how much couples are dealing with, and a lot more patience on their behalf. That stretch is part of the Voyage LA feature, and it shaped how we work today.

Earning trust with planners and venues took longer. Those relationships don’t come from a website. They come from showing up early, staying on timeline, and working well with the rest of the vendor team, over and over.

It took years of consistent events before planners started bringing us in by name. We still treat every event as a chance to keep that trust.

How We Think About Risk

The interview also asked Rex about risk. His answer: prepare as much as you can, be honest about what you could lose, and then commit fully.

Going full-time as a DJ and starting the Pro DJ Lab, our online scratch school, both came from that approach. Teaching lets Rex pass turntablism on to the next generation of DJs.

The risk is rarely as big as the regret of not trying.
