Olivia and Ray hired us as their Galway Downs wedding DJ for a reception built around the music they grew up on. On October 20, 2023, 183 guests filled Wedgewood Weddings by Galway Downs in Temecula, including family and friends from Oakland, Sacramento, Colorado, New Mexico, New York, Oregon, San Diego, Canada and the Philippines. We played the recessional, ran the reception music and lit the room in purple.
This recap covers how the night was planned, what played and why, and what couples planning a Temecula wedding can take from it.
Olivia and Ray gave us a clear, specific brief. They wanted mostly 80s, 90s and early 2000s hip-hop and R&B, and a night that felt like the high school parties and Downtown Fullerton Thursdays they remembered.
They also asked for a short reggae and island set, a West Coast rap set, and a few songs for the older relatives: The Beatles, Chicago and Earth, Wind & Fire. A brief like this is easier to play well than “play anything,” because it tells us where the room will go and which generation needs a song at which point in the night.
For the ceremony, Ray asked for a recessional that peaked at the exact moment the couple was introduced as married. We used Starship’s “Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us Now” and edited it so the chorus lands on the announcement. The idea came from the film Instant Family.
Edits like this take lead time. We need the song, the moment it should hit and the officiant’s cue well before the wedding, so the timing is built and checked ahead of the day instead of improvised.
The wedding party entered to Arrested Development’s “People Everyday” in the Metamorphosis Mix. For the grand entrance, we built a custom edit of Fia’s “Love Me,” and MC Mitchell introduced the couple under the LOVE letters and purple uplighting.
Ray’s mother did not know what was coming. The mother-son dance opened with NSYNC and Gloria Estefan’s “Music of My Heart” and moved into BTS’s “Dynamite,” a surprise built for her. Planning a surprise like this means we know about it in advance, so the MC, the lighting and the music all cue together.
Here is the full run of songs for the key moments of the night.
