🎤 Interview with Aeson Buado
Q1: How did you first get into photography? What inspired you to pick up a camera?
I first got into photography when apps like VSCO and Instagram started gaining popularity, but my main inspiration came from my dad, who documented our family outings and random moments with his film cameras. Initially, I picked up a camera to capture landscapes and nature, it’s really what got me started. I would photograph whatever was around me, experimenting with composition and edits using the VSCO app. The documentary side of my photography definitely came from seeing how my dad preserved our family’s everyday moments, which inspired me to use anything I had at hand, whether that was my old iPhone 3G or a GoPro. Once I finally saved up enough to purchase my first DSLR, I was instantly hooked. Coming from a background in creating 3D art for video games, photography provided a similar creative outlet but allowed me to create something tangible and immediate.
Q2: How would you describe your photography style?
My photography style is primarily documentary with a photojournalistic approach. While I enjoy incorporating editorial inspired images into my work, my main passion is capturing genuine emotions and authentic moments. Storytelling through natural interactions is at the core of my approach. I’m also a sucker for details.
Q3: What’s your favorite part about photographing weddings or events?
My favorite part about weddings is telling the real story of the day, capturing genuine interactions between people, reading the room, and anticipating when those moments happen. That’s honestly what makes it so rewarding.
Q4: Can you share a memorable shoot or wedding that stands out to you?
The most memorable wedding for me has to be my first solo wedding shoot in Italy, which was for a close friend of mine. Spending an entire week in Italy, surrounded by good people, was unforgettable. And as a bonus, that trip is where I met my future wife haha! I will always cherish that forever. She was one of the bridesmaids by the way.
Q5: What do you think couples or clients should look for when hiring a photographer?
I think couples should look beyond just pretty photos and instead find a photographer whose images genuinely make them feel something. A photographer should be someone you resonate with, both in terms of their visual style and personality. You’ll be spending a significant amount of your wedding day with them, so it’s crucial to feel comfortable and at ease around them. I also think it’s important that your photographer educates you about their process rather than being overly salesy or transactional. Ask potential photographers to share a full wedding gallery with you, not just their highlights. Seeing a complete gallery helps you understand how they tell stories throughout the entire day and gives you a realistic sense of what to expect. Ultimately, choose someone whose work moves you emotionally and who you trust to capture moments authentically and artfully.
Q6: How do you prepare for an event or shoot?
Preparation is key, and clear communication is at the heart of it. I stay closely connected with my clients to set expectations and ensure we’re on the same page. I usually scout locations online to save time but deliberately avoid looking at other photographers’ work from those spots, so my creativity remains fresh and authentic. The day before the shoot, I review my client’s responses to the questionnaire I sent them and charge and pack all my camera gear.
Q7: What gear do you currently shoot with, and do you have any favorite lenses or tools?
I shoot with two Sony A7IV cameras, four prime lenses, Godox flashes, a Contax G2, and a Nikon F5 and FA. My favorite lens is the Sony 50mm GM f/1.2, my go-to film camera is the Nikon FA, and my favorite practical tools are my rocket blower and earplugs which have saved me many times at loud receptions.
Q8: How do you keep the energy flowing and your subjects comfortable in front of the camera?
I always make sure to meet and connect with my clients beforehand, so we feel comfortable around each other. Understanding their dynamic helps me create an atmosphere where they feel relaxed. During the shoot, I encourage lots of movement and natural interaction to keep energy levels high. Once everyone’s comfortable, I ask if they’re up to do some creative stuff/poses, and typically by then, they’re excited and open to trying new things.
Q9: You’ve worked with a variety of clients—how do you tailor your approach to match each event or personality?
Building a solid connection at the start is crucial. I like to understand each client’s vibe and personality, then adapt my approach and energy accordingly. Matching their comfort level and style helps ensure that their photographs genuinely reflect who they are.
Q10: Any advice for aspiring photographers trying to find their voice or grow their business?
Always practice your craft. Learn the fundamentals thoroughly so you can confidently break the rules later. Get familiar with your gear and experiment with various photography genres, even those you might initially feel hesitant about because you never know what you might end up loving. I never thought I’d be interested in weddings until I second-shot one with a friend, and I was hooked ever since.
On the business side, which I hate haha, you need persistence and commitment. It’s challenging, but choosing to commit fully is the hardest yet most rewarding step. Take advantage of the free resources available online to build a solid business foundation. Keep creating work that you truly love, because genuine passion always shines through and ultimately attracts clients who resonate with your vision. Running a business is very hard, none of it easy, so choose your hard and go for it!
