🎤 Interview with Astray photography & videography

Q1: How did you two get started as a photo and video team? What’s the story behind Astray Video?

Behind the name Astray – What began as a shared love for the open road and documenting our travels in high school has formed into a full-time career capturing authentic love stories all over the world.

When we first started dating at the age of 17, we dreamed of creating a travel magazine—something that would capture the thrill and freedom of the open road. That’s where the name Astray was born, inspired by our passion for adventure and the idea of stepping off the beaten path. A few years later and no magazine, we fell into the wedding industry and the name was put to use.

While we absolutely love traveling to epic locations and feeling that humbling sense of how small we really are in this vast world, there’s nothing more fulfilling than connecting with the couples we photograph and building lifelong bonds through the art of storytelling.

Q2: How would you describe your style and approach when capturing weddings?

We pour our hearts into every wedding, creating images and videos that will last a lifetime for you and your families. Our goal is for you to look back at your photos and video and feel like you’re right there, reliving those special moments from your day. Every frame is an opportunity to capture your story in a way that feels raw, emotional, and uniquely yours. If you want to create something unforgettable and real, then we’re the team for you!

Q3: What’s your favorite part of the wedding day to document, and why?

From getting ready moments to cutting the cake, there are so many special moments throughout the day of a wedding. Our favorite moments are those brief, split second moments that summarize the entirety of emotions in one click. Grandma covering her mouth as she sees the bride walk down the aisle, the brides soft tears as she watches her now husband dance with his mom, the laughter of guests during cocktail hour as they see a friend they haven’t seen in years. Those are our favorite moments to capture.

Q4: How do you help couples feel natural in front of the camera?

Letting the day unfold naturally, and capturing it in a way that feels true to who you are. Because at the heart of every great photo is a great connection. Our style is a blend of photojournalistic with a bit of direction.

Q5: What’s one of the most memorable weddings you’ve filmed or photographed, and what made it special?

Couples that bring you in and make you feel as if you are a guest are special. We all want to feel like we are included and our presence is wanted. One very font memory is a wedding we photographed in the mountains of Utah. It was a very small group with close family and best friends. On the dance floor they pulled out a Smirnoff Ice and Iced Andy as the bridal party went crazy. Later that night we joined the bride and groom around the bonfire and just talked life. Keep in mind, this was our first time meeting this couple with no previous connection.

Q6: How does working as a husband and wife team help your couples (and make your work better)?

Based in North County, San Diego, we’re a husband-and-wife team with over a decade of experience capturing love stories. With backgrounds rooted in both artistry and storytelling, Andy was the senior staff photographer for concerts and sporting events at SDSU, while Brittney studied Visual Communications at FIDM. Together, we bring a blend of technical skill and creative vision to every shoot. We’re just two simple people who cherish family laughter and believe that same perspective is exactly what we bring to a wedding day.

As we celebrate over 10 years in business, we’re endlessly grateful—not just for the work we love, but for the fact that after a decade of working side by side, we still love each other (most days, haha!).

Q7: What do you love most about collaborating with DJs, planners, and other vendors on the day?

Working with a great vendor team makes all the difference! Being on the same page with planners that you trust makes the day run so much more smoothly. The behind the scenes moments that brides and grooms don’t see is night and day when working with a trusted team. A top notch Dj is not necessary, its mandatory! Your dj determines the flow of ceremony, the vibe for the entirety of your day from pre-ceremony to cocktail to grand entrance and all formalities. As a videographer, working with an experienced dj makes all the difference as we need to coordinate in order to record speeches for audio to include into your film.

Q8: What makes Astray photography & videgraphy different from other teams?

In all honesty their are so many amazing artists out there. It is imperative you fall in love with the photographer or videographer as much as you do their work. Our reviews of over 250 five stars speak as a testimony of the love and dedication we pour into each of our clients. We truly value each person and treat their day with respect as it is the biggest day in most peoples lives. We like to think the photos and videos we create are a byproduct of our personalities and who we are as people.

Q9: What advice would you give couples when it comes to getting the best out of their wedding film and photos?

Great question. Just be you! Don’t worry about the cameras. We will be there to capture everything, that is our job. The best photos and video footage happen when couples are truly present enjoying their day. The true laughter, smiles, and glances are moments that cant be replaced

Q10: Where can people find your work and connect with you?
